Industry highlights week 04 – 08 April 2022

It almost feels like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV has been around for years with all the spy photos and reports of the electric SUV. However, it hasn’t been revealed yet and the German automaker is preparing to launch its zero-emissions flagship SUV later this month. German battery startup Theion is promising a new sulfur battery technology that could help mainstream electric cars offer 900 miles of range on a single charge. The best part? Compared to the core ingredients of conventional NMC li-ion batteries, sulfur is cheap. See the article here.

NIO is the only electric automaker that has successfully managed to make battery swapping part of its business. It is now reportedly in talks to license its battery swap stations to other automakers as it expands to Europe and the US. See the article here.

Tata is a small crossover leader on its domestic market, but the Curvv previews a slightly larger and more posh high-rider with the oh-so fashionable fastback rear. The manufacturer says it plans to have several powertrain options for the production Curvv, expected to debut in 2024, but the first one will be a pure-electric one. See the article here.

Smart has unveiled its first dedicated electric vehicle and the first model since becoming a joint venture between the Mercedes-Benz Group and Geely (Smart Automobile Co., Ltd). Smart’s first dedicated electric vehicle features a 66 kWh NCM battery enabling up to 273 miles of range (WLTP).  See the article here.
